You can always expect heavy traffic in and around Barcelona. The most intense are the rush hours between 8 and 10 AM, and 6:30 and 8:30 PM. The speed limit in urban areas across Spain is typically 50 km/h (31 mph). The highways have a maximum speed limit of 120 km/h (75 mph) and the rural roads — 90 km/h (55 mph). It’s smart to avoid speeding near Barcelona as even a small exceeding of the limits can result in a significant fine.
