If you plan longer trips around Lombardy, then a convenient SUV or a more spacious car is a great choice. For driving in Milan city, we rather recommend a smaller car as the streets are crowded and the parking in the city center can be challenging.
Milan attracts many tourists as well as business travelers throughout the year. Therefore, we recommend planning more time for your road trips. You’d also want to consider the rush hour in and around Milan city. From 7 to 9 AM and 5 to 8 PM there are usually more traffic jams. Some highways tend to be more congested, for example, A50 and A51 around the city and A7 between Milan and Genoa. You can also expect a heavier traffic during the holiday season when ski centers in the Bergamo Alps attract many winter sports fans.
