The best way to explore the secrets of Lyon? By car!
Car rental is the most convenient way for discovering the scenic surroundings of Lyon and Alps region.
The traffic in and around Lyon is usually heavy. To save time, you might want to avoid the rush hour between 8 and 10 AM, and between 4 and 6 PM. Lyon is situated on the so-called “holiday route” from Paris to the Mediterranean coast. This means that in the summer holiday season, the motorways A6 and A7 that connect Lyon to Paris and Avignon, tend to get overcrowded. For a stress-free holiday, we recommend planning more time for these routes during the summer months.
For driving in Lyon city, a small or compact rental car is a great choice. If you plan longer trips to the vineyards in the Rhône valley, or driving to the ski resorts in Alps mountains, then we recommend renting an SUV or a more spacious car for your comfort.
The speed limit in urban areas across France is typically 50 km/h (31 mph) and sometimes 30 km/h (18 mph) in downtown areas. Two to three-lane roads have a speed limit of 80 km/h (49 mph), and four-lane roads of 110 km/h (68 mph). On motorways, the speed limit is 130 km/h (80 mph). All these limits are lower in case of rain or snowfall. It’s also good to know that green directional signs point to a non-motorway main route or a "free road". The blue signs indicate a freeway route and are often marked "péage" meaning you’ll need to pay a road toll.
